IMPORTANT NOTICE
The Samaritan Club of Calgary wishes to inform all agencies who use our Family Assistance Program (emergency food support) and our Special Requests Program (aids to daily living), that we are unable to process any further requests until September.
Due to exceptionally high demand for these programs in this fiscal year, our resources allocated to these programs have been exhausted.
Please share this information with healthcare workers, social workers, and community support workers.
Additional information will be provided in August as we review our programs over the summer months.
Family Assistance
Each year we help over 1000 adults and children with groceries and prescription medications in the form of vouchers from Co-op where they can make purchases to fill their needs. This service is a last resort to our clients and remains a mainstay of our programs as the need never goes away.
Education
Currently, we work through Education Matters to provide scholarships to two educational programs. Louise Dean School assists young moms in completing their high school education. The Discovering Choices program enables academically capable students, who do not experience success in their designated school, with self-directed learning offering flexible hours. Our scholarships support graduates from these programs to continue their education at a post-secondary level.
Additional Projects
When funding allows, we consider additional programs presented to us, which fall within the Samaritan Club mandate.
Layettes
Over 700 bundles of baby items including diapers, onesies, sleepers, hooded towels, blankets, knitted sweaters and hats, are assembled over 4 bundlings annually. These layettes are given to Calgary hospitals and agencies for newborns of low-income families. We have a community of knitters and church groups across the city contributing quilted blankets and knitwear to our cause.
Special Requests
We manage requests from the healthcare community for assistance in financing aids to daily living and equipment for the Calgary community. Often on a cost-share basis, we contribute to aids for disadvantaged and disabled clients who have nowhere else to turn. We also sponsor children with special needs to attend summer camps.
